Breathe It Away

SDC12646_2

“Just Breathe It Away” are the wise words once uttered to me.

And which I’ll never forget. They’ve stayed with me since and have brought me great freedom from life’s difficult times.

The truth is there are going to be difficult times on your life’s journey. Moments of unease, frustration, anger, fear, weakness or pain.

But it’s up to you to choose your response, your approach to whatever’s thrown your way.

You can let things consume you, get at you, aggravate you, have power over you. Or you can choose to Breathe It Away and thereby release yourself from any hold.

The breath is a very powerful tool, that we are all so fortunate to have. At your beckon call it comes forth, in any state that you so ask for.

Allow the breath to guide you, steer you, strengthen you, free you.

You won’t always have the security, the comfort, the peace of being under your covers, wrapped in your blanket, on your meditation cushion or under the dimmed and assuring lights of your yoga class. Sometimes you have to face the music – directly.

So say you’re sitting opposite someone and they say something that gets your back up, that annoying or ridiculous thing they’ve said before and you just know they’ll say again! “How dare they!” When they know how much it upsets or annoys you why are they doing it? Why aren’t they changing?” Or you see something that makes you see red, you hear something that makes your heart sink, your stomach churn. And you feel like there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. “No escape” you say. “I just can’t cope, I’m just so argh right now, my heart is thumping uncontrollably and I need to shout out!” “I need to leave this space. I need to go back to my room, shut the door and stay under my covers, until they change.”

And this is perfectly natural. As human beings, you will feel things, experience different emotions, be ruffled in different ways.

But another truth for you, which may seem shocking: They don’t need to change. They simply are, it simply is this way. You need to change.

You can only ever work on yourself.

So when you feel so strongly in such a way that it causes you pain. Bring it back to you – see the effect, the unhealthiness this is creating for you. Know that it is time for a new response. You can change the cycle, start afresh!

Start by surrendering to your powerlessness. You don’t need to deny how you feel – feelings will change in time with new habits – you just need to bring acceptance to where you are right now and learn to feel your breath.

Breathe It Away. Breathe It Away.
Wherever you are, whatever the difficult situation bring a conscious awareness to your breathing, slow it down and count to 10. And just stay present. You don’t need to escape.

In doing so you will find new answers, new meaning, new responses and new guidance you may not have known could exist.

Try it – Breathe It Away – and find your release.

Freedom through Discipline

A path to freedom is through self-discipline.

Quite often discipline is viewed in a negative light, as something which limits you, is too severe, too controlling or mundane. But this view shadows the importance and true beauty that such an art form has to offer. Through certain discipline we can actually free ourselves and draw a forcefield around us protecting our healthy selves.

Freedom is something that we are all searching for, whether it is on the forefront of our consciousness or a little deeper within. We love what freedom makes possible – the ability to do, act and say what we like, live the life we so desire, express our authentic selves with ease and spread our wings wide! Yet, so many of us are creating distance between ourselves and freedom by not paying enough attention to our everyday choices. By acting on impulsive decisions and for short-term pleasure we make freedom harder to reach. In reality we are yearning for a guiding light to show us the way home to our healthy nature – and we can shine the torch today by choosing discipline.

The wonderful thing is, any day you so choose, you can learn discipline and make your way to freedom! You can help prevent feelings of tiredness, heaviness, unworthiness or even illness. You can attract positivity and create new life-changing habits and rediscover what it feels like to be free! You can relearn the beauty of life! – All it takes is a little discipline and an open heart.

For me, discipline is my ally, accompanying me through life, helping me to remain happy and healthy. I non-restrictively follow certain patterns of behaviour that help me to live and develop myself in the best way I know how. And I can honestly say I love it! Thanks to my self-imposed discipline I feel light, full of energy and peaceful. I am more active, alert, clear-headed and full of life! I have a good vision of where I am headed. I truly enjoy having discipline in my life and all the benefits it provides me with.

My Daily Discipline:

I get up at 6am and practice half an hour of Sun Salutations followed by some gentle stretches and breathing techniques. Providing me with a fit, light, supple, healthy body; a calm and focused mind and bounds of energy for the day!

At 6.30am I brush my teeth and shower, finishing off with cold water to feel fully awake and refreshed! I then make myself comfortable, prop myself upright on my yoga block with a soft blanket around me for a 20 minute meditation. Bringing me more peace and quiet for my day.

Between 7.20am and 8am I enjoy the morning time – being my favourite time of day! I nourish myself with a healthy breakfast of cold cereal and fruit (now that it’s warmer weather) and I relax listening to the sounds of nature in my garden.

I leave for school at 8am. I work full-time as a Teaching Assistant in a Primary School.

Lunch is at noon and is a salad sandwich with an apple, banana or yogurt and water. I like to eat light and healthily so not to feel sluggish in my afternoon activities.

I get home at 3.45pm and unwind usually sitting on my bed with a glass of water or milk. I take 15 minutes of ‘free time’, checking emails, chatting to friends and family, checking post or just relaxing. This time allows me to check in with myself and how I’m feeling.

My yoga self practice is at 4pm. I practice my own routines for an hour, often finishing with a meditation. Leaving me feeling re-energised, awake, peaceful and ready for the early evening!

I eat dinner at 6pm, or as near to, depending on the layout of my day. I like to have an early dinner to nourish myself well after yoga and leave room for digestion before bed. I usually have a grain with vegetables, and perhaps a little dairy or fish.

Around 7 or 8pm I walk my dog or cycle outdoors enjoying the fresh air and sounds around me. This also helps my dinner to digest well.

The evening is my preferred time to read inspiring books, listen to music, create cards and presents, lie on my bed and chill out.

Between 9pm and 9.30pm I wash and prepare myself for bed. I think through my day, sometimes writing things down in my diary. I assess what things worked well and what changes I can create. I set goals and intentions for the next day, week, and months to come.

Lights out and sleeping time is 10pm. I like to get my full 8 hours sleep to feel well rested the next day, on top form and to make it as productive as I can!

My routine is simplistic but very effective for me. I make sure that I am not too rigid or serious with it, and allow for additions or alterations and the needs of my friends and family. Sunday is my day away from a schedule, although I naturally want to do a lot of these things! I also make holiday time with friends and family. For me, the key things are being happy and healthy. I eat well, exercise, live positively and most importantly remember to smell the roses.

You can establish discipline any time you like. Start slowly, little by little by daily integrating more behaviour into your days. Try things out, drop things that don’t work for you and let freedom shine brightly.

Spring into Yoga!

sdc10619
Today is a beautiful sunny Spring day!

A perfect day you might say. I can hear the birds cheeping, see the daffodils all over my garden, smell the roses and taste pure nature!

This afternoon I went for a bike ride on the Milldown, a lovely open space of countryside next to my house. My very happy and energetic black lab Bungle ran excitedly next to me, whilst I was cycling and breathing in as much Spring air as I could inhale!

I’ve enjoyed some homemade rolls with hummus, smoked salmon and salad, some delicious fruit, yogurt and almond butter (similar to peanut butter except almonds! mmm!) on rye bread.

As it’s Spring I thought it a great time to Spring clean my bedroom! I put on some uplifting Shiva Rea CD, opened my window wide and decluttered my draws and cleared the space. Decluttering is one of my favourite things to do as it helps me to clear physical and mental space. Afterwards I felt clearer and much more focused.

The most of the day and also my favourite part is being part of a yoga photo shoot! And I’m proud to say I created it my self! Not wanting to miss out on the sunshine and taking the opportunity to practice my beloved yoga it seemed a fab thing to do. So I set myself up in front of some beautiful flowers in my garden and placed my mat in front of the sun. I picked my outfit carefully, two tops: a turquoise blue one I haven’t worn since last Summer and a pink one with some fitted three-quarter length trousers. Nice and bright for Spring! Then I put the timer on my camera ready for the shoot! It felt amazing doing my asanas outside surrounded by beauty. My body came alive as I stretched into various postures. Ahhhh.

It’s nearing the evening now and I’m feeling very happy with myself and my day. I feel healthy and very alert.

The main reason I’m feeling so happy is because I’m pleased with the choices I’ve made today. This morning I didn’t feel good.

Despite it being a beautiful Spring day I did not feel cheerful and I lay under my covers for most of the early hours. I got up and had my porridge and then went back to bed.

I had a sick feeling in my stomach and felt quite low. I didn’t like the idea of doing yoga, going to the Milldown or even getting up!

After a while I decided to read some of my inspiring book in hope I might feel differently and find some of the motivation I was lacking. I didn’t push myself to get up, but instead I just asked myself gently what I wanted to do. Did I want to stay in bed all day? What could make me feel better? What kind of a day did I want to have? I put these questions out there. And the answers just came to me…

I have taken good care of myself today, saying peaceful, gentle words and this has led me to having a super day.

I thank the words I read in my inspiring books, I thank the gentle approach I have taken with myself and I thank Spring for entering my day.

Sometimes we don’t have good mornings. Sometimes we wake up uninspired, flat or sick. But we still have choice. We still have choice of how we want our day to progress.

We can choose how we treat ourselves, we can choose how we start the day and how we will end the day. What can happen can amaze you. You can feel totally transformed form start to finish.

For me today I knew what would work best and I didn’t need to force myself. I was simply loving and created space and I surely choose well. I chose to put a Spring in my step.
